Orchestrating an application’s containerization (SAE53)
A containerized train-booking platform, in development and in production.
Context
A SAÉ project (learning and assessment situation) in the third year of my BUT: designing and building a complete infrastructure for a train-ticket booking platform.
What I did
- Deployed the platform on two separate environments, development and production, hosted on Debian 12 virtual machines.
- Orchestrated all services with Docker Compose.
- Automated releases with CI/CD pipelines on GitLab.
- Managed containers with Portainer and monitored both environments with Netdata.
Architecture
- 2 environments: development and production, strictly separated.
- Docker Compose: full orchestration of the services.
- GitLab CI/CD: every release starts from a pipeline.
Outcome
A traveler-facing booking application, with authentication and the management and tracking of an account’s bookings.
What I took away
Separating the two environments was not an organizational detail: it forced everything through the integration chain, so nothing was ever deployed by hand. That is what makes the platform reproducible.
